PRONI recently hosted an exhibition from esteemed nautical genealogogist David Snook entitled, ‘The merchant Seamen of Sailortown, Belfast 1918 ’. This fascinating exhibition of photographic identity cards, relating to merchant seamen from Sailortown working in home and foreign trade in 1918. The exhibition was launched with a talk exploring the administrative context of the ID record cards and the unique possibilities offered by the source in the making of family history for people with roots in a storied part of Belfast.
